Axolotls are an aquatic species of salamander native to Mexico. These salamanders can get up to 9-18 inches. Due to their size they will require a decent size enclosure. Axolotls can live 10-15+ years making them a big commitment pet. Axolotls can make great pets but just like any amphibian, salamander, or newt, they are going to be a “look-but-don’t-touch” type of pet. Salamanders in general tend to dislike handling and will try to get away if possible. They have sensitive skin and when being handled, the oils on our hands are actually harmful to them. With axolotls being aquatic (though they do come up to breathe air) it still isn't a good idea to leave them out of the water for too long.
