Spanish ribbed newts are an aquatic species of newt native to Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. These newts can get up to 8-12 inches making them among the largest newt species in the world. Due to their size they will require a decent size enclosure. These newts can live 10-15+ years making them a big commitment pet. Spanish newts can make great pets but just like any amphibian, they are going to be a “look-but-don’t-touch” type of pet. Amphibians in general tend to dislike handling and will try to get away if possible. Amphibians have sensitive skin and when being handled, the oils on our hands are actually harmful to them.
