Hermann’s tortoises are a land species that can get 4-9” native to Southern and Eastern Europe. Even though they are smaller than other turtles and tortoises, they will need a large enclosure due to their active nature. Hermann’s tortoises can live 50-70+ years but commonly living up to 100 years, making them a big commitment pet. Just like any turtle or tortoise, they are not big fans of being picked up and are actually very scared of heights. Frequent handling, loud noises, or sudden environmental changes can cause stress and be easily frightened. Hermann's tortoises make great pets as they are generally friendly, gentle, and highly responsive to their owners, often following them around or coming up to the glass when they want attention.
