Red foot tortoises are a land species that can get 10-14” native to Central and South America. They will need a large enclosure due to their size and active nature. Red footed tortoises can live 50-100 years making them a big commitment pet. Just like any turtle or tortoise, they are not big fans of being picked up and are actually very scared of heights. Frequent handling, loud noises, or sudden environmental changes can cause stress and be easily frightened. Red foots make great pets as they are highly intelligent, curious, and generally outgoing. They can be highly responsive to their owners, often following them around or coming up to the glass when they want attention.
