Russian tortoises are a land species that can get 5-10” native to Central Asia. Even though they are smaller than other turtles and tortoises, they will need a large enclosure due to their active nature. Russian tortoises can live 40-50 years but commonly living up to 100 years, making them a big commitment pet. Just like any turtle or tortoise, they are not big fans of being picked up and are actually very scared of heights. Frequent handling, loud noises, or sudden environmental changes can cause stress and be easily frightened. Russian tortoises make great pets as they are known for being generally friendly, active, inquisitive, and having bold personalities.
