Chinese box turtles are a land species that can get 5-12” native to East Asia. Even though they are smaller than other turtles and tortoises, they will need a large enclosure due to their active nature. Chinese box turtles can live 40-60+ years making them a big commitment pet. Just like any turtle or tortoise, they are not big fans of being picked up and are actually very scared of heights. Frequent handling, loud noises, or sudden environmental changes can cause stress and be easily frightened. Chinese box turtles are generally intelligent, inquisitive, and docile, but they can be shy initially. They are highly responsive to their keepers and quickly learn to associate humans with food, often begging or following movements.
