Sulcata tortoises are a land species that can get 2-3’ native to Africa. They will need a large enclosure due to their size and active nature. Sulcatas can live 70-100+ years making them a big commitment pet. Just like any turtle or tortoise, they are not big fans of being picked up and are actually very scared of heights. Frequent handling, loud noises, or sudden environmental changes can cause stress and be easily frightened. Though they can be stubborn, Sulcata tortoises make great pets as they are intelligent creatures of habit that learn familiar routines, recognize their owners, and can develop surprisingly outgoing, persistent, and bold personalities as they grow.
